Australia’s capital is turning 98 this year and the gridded city is letting its hair down with a two-week celebration.

Enlighten: See Canberra in a Whole New Light is a new event that will be held after hours with illuminated famous buildings and international headline acts including George Benson (Fri 11 Mar), INXS (Sat 12 Mar), Chris Isaak (Fri 18 Mar) and even Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons (Sat 19 Mar).

“Visitors will see the stunning foreshore of Lake Burley Griffin transformed into a festive hub and national attractions come to life with spectacularly lit facades and special one-off activities,” says Simonne Shepherd, Australian Capital Tourism General Manager.

Enlighten will take place over four nights in March – two Fridays and two Saturdays. Visitors have the option of buying the Gold package ($91.20) for entry to the event hub at Commonwealth Place and one after-dark adventure, or the Platinum package ($136.20) for access to the event hub, an after-dark experience, and entry to a platinum experience of your choice.

At Parliament House the After-Dark Experience (11, 12, 18 & 19 Mar) includes a behind-the-scenes tour of the Parliamentary art collection and architecture. Get to know the history of the building of rowdy political debates and immerse yourself in the stories behind the Parliamentary portraits. The Platinum package (Sat 19 Mar, 7pm) involves a scrumptious modern Australian banquet with live entertainment and picturesque views from Queens Terrace atop Parliament House.

To indulge in a bit more political history, get yourself a ticket to the After-Dark Experience (11, 12, 18 & 19 Mar) at Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House for the Spies, Leaks and Scandals tour to hear stories of foreign spies and the daily espionage of Australian journalists. The Platinum Experience (Sat 12 Mar, 6.30pm) includes wining and dining under the stars with the creators of some of 2010’s best political cartoons and delving into the secrets of caricaturing prominent political personalities.

If you’re more interested in the arts then the National Gallery of Australia After-dark experience (11, 12, 18 & 19 Mar) offers a late night viewing of Ballets Russes: The Art of Costume exhibition of artists who designed for the famous 20th century company including Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque and others. The Platinum Experience (11, 12, 18 & 19 Mar, 5pm) takes it up a notch with access to Live at the Sculpture Garden and a night of art talks, comedy, cabaret, music and fashion.

Other birthday celebrations include the Canberra Festival Balloon Spectacular (12–20 Mar), Symphony in the Park (Sun 13 Mar), Celebrate in the Park (Mon 14 Mar) and Lights!Canberra!Action! (Fri 18 Mar). So pack your bags and take a short drive over the border for some fun in Australia’s largest inland city.

CarnivArgyle: carnaval em Sydney!!

Sydney will get all the excitement of Rio throughout the month of March with CarnivArgyle at the Argyle from 1–31 March.

Because the one-night event in 2010 was a big success, the Argyle has decided to make March a month-long celebration of all things Latin American, from food, to dance, to drinks.

One of Sydney’s famous larger bars, the Argyle and its renowned cobblestone courtyard will be transformed into a ‘little Latin America’. Guests will be able to soak up plenty of atmosphere and excitement for free during the same month as Carnivale in Rio.

Entertainment throughout the month will include dance and drumming shows, live musical acts, Latin-accented DJ sessions, as well as interactive samba classes and tequila tastings each week. The action will reach its peak with a launch celebration on 11 March, when the party will continue late into the night.

Food will also be a huge feature of the month, bringing the tastes of Brazil, Argentina and more to Sydney food-lovers every Thursday evening.

A BBQ will take pride of place in the courtyard with churrasco specialties including meat skewers with chimichurri and Brazil’s national dish feijoada. There will also be a special churros stand, serving the Spanish ‘donuts’ with rich chocolate sauce.

On Friday and Saturday nights, a late night BBQ will serve up more-ish chorizo ‘hot dogs’ with jalapeño salsa.

In contemporary tapas restaurant Argyle Bazar, renowned chef Miguel Maestre and the team have added Latin American themed specials to the menu including ‘DIY’ ceviche with prawn and kingfish, Creole chicken wings, pan fried morcilla and banana fritters with caramel sauce.

Tuesday 1 March 1: A Latin Affair

Argyle Bazar will kick off the festival with a Chilean and Argentinean themed evening with matching wines and hosted by winemakers to help food-lovers explore the regions.

Friday 11 March 11: CarnivArgyle Festival Party

CarnivArgyle’s night of nights is Friday 11 March with a Carnivale-style wild, rocking party. Renowned dancer/drummers from Rhythm Brazil and Brazilian capoeira entertainers will get the party started, while food stalls will provide sustenance for plenty of dancing throughout the night. Premium tequila and rum will be available to sample and some of Sydney’s best DJs will inject some Latin beats late into the night.
